Because if you can understand the sciences at that level it usually means you can grasp other high level thought as well. Being a rocket scientist requires some pretty intense study. Reading a bible does not.

My point. He speaking from a point of authority which he does not have. Not saying you need a PhD to be a philosopher but at the same time a PhD in Neuroscience doesn't mean you're also authoritive on everything outside your field of study.

My problem with many in new athiest movement is thier obsesive Scientistism. Even ignoring the God question they believe that metaphysical ideas can be reduced to the scientific method. It's complete nonsense. Morality for example is completely out side the realm of physical. It wholey a concept within the human mind. Completely outside the realm of science.

Morality isn't complicated. It simply at its core means that actions taken against or in service of other sentient beings are capable of emotional effect that other being. As human beings are understood to be sentient and capable of emotional differing states, actions which negatively effect their emotional or physical well-being are considered bad while actions which positively effect their emotional or physical well-being are bad.
Seeing as we can measure emotional and physical well-being using neuroscience and biology, it is not unscientific to describe actions as good or bad based on what observed effects it has on a person.

You're putting words in my mouth. You don't need religion to study morality or even be moral. My point is that concepts such as morality are outside the realm of science.

Science is completely normative. Just because we "know" people have emotions or react a certain way doesn't preclude how they should be treated. Or whenever it good or bad or even if it matters. You can't test you're example using the scientific method. Hence while you may be correct from a scientific point of view you're morality is just conjecture.

Think of questions such as Utilitarian vs Deontoligical, Individualism vs Collectivism, absolute truth vs moral relativism. These are questions that science can't answer by its very nature.
