Nuclear power plants have these things called failsafes, so even if everyone working there took off to secure their families and belongings, the power plants would inevitably shut themselves down.
As these places decay, the immediate area around the power plants would no doubt enjoy being saturated in radiation for a while.
So honestly, it's not a particularly impressive scenario. No mushroom clouds and screaming children or anything. This shit tends to be fairly lackluster.
