is picking cotton really that "hard work"? You're just picking a piece off a plant, and then shoving it in a bag. Yes, I get that the conditions sucked, but the work itself wasn't exactly difficult or hard, just manpower intensive-needing lots of low skill laborers to clear a field.

Compare this to coal mining, or the chinese building the railroads, not exactly that hard of work...
