Are they worth it? The wind is blowing in a dark direction these days. Non-STEMfags are going to end up either jobless or making shit tier money.

Coding Boot Camps seem like a cheap alternative to going to 4 years of University. But are they effective? Are programming jobs over-rated?

Is it really true that "anyone can code?"

I don't want to become obsolete, but I don't want to fall for a fad.

I'd say that anyone can code, of course some people are more apt to it than others, but really it comes down to learning how to think like a machine and using that to make it do what you want.

I can't really say, I'm getting close to finishing my degree in CS and I already have a job that I've been working at and plan to stay with, but it's an engineering job.
I was MechEng with CS minor but changed majors to CS because I fucking hated the later engineering courses

I would say this is the biggest meme of this generation. I took a coding class. There is actually a ton of math behind the scenes, and if you aren't very good in math you will suck at coding.

I am an engineer and do a lot of programming and scripting. It is fulfilling if you arent just a cog in the machine. If you are just a cubicle code monkey making it kind of sucks.

I'm a unemployed high school graduate. I've been coding since I was 14, how in the hell is knowing a language going to automatically get you a job? if you want to learn to code why bother with the "boot camp". A search engine and few quite/days nights are all you need.

To be honest there are a lot of coding types that don't rely too much on math. It really depends what you're trying to code. If you're a good problem solver and logical thinker you can usually get by.

I remember being an in insufferable little fuck that would tune out in math classes but need mathematical solution when trying for example to create a simple 2d shooter type game, between the solution I came up with and ones I learned I taught myself basic geometry and a good chunk of trig. And that was just C.
Of course I started in Visual Basic 4. Which made starting to code super simple but getting the basic was no more or less difficult than a language like Python, which doesn't even require a lot of mathematical though since the syntax is so clear and most things you would need are already available in its vast array of hardware libraries.

If you don't need code for straight up pure computer science and just as a handy tool than yeah "anybody" can learn something like python.

Start off with small projects, like calculators, or easy games like minesweeper. after you feel comfortable with the language move on to work with applications involving databases, an application for an inventory would be great for this.

This is true but the emergent skills you will acquire learning these languages are applicable to nearly any modern software job that isn't UI/UX.

I'm a software developer at a company you've heard of. Nobody would hire based strictly on learning to code at a "boot camp". But maybe there's a startup or less rigorous software work out there that a code class would be sufficient for. My personal suggestion would be to demonstrate ability to learn by starting yourself, then display your ability by starting projects on sites like github, bitbucket, etc. so potential employers can asses your skill through your work.

I'd argue that they actually teach you to code in functional paradigm, while most of current programming is done in objective paradigm languages.

Funny enough, my job is mostly CAD work, which we spent 1 week out of an early engineering class on and with no more CAD use course-wise

The most important thing to do around a group of programming kids is to figure out who is the smartest. Get in contact with the guy and try to become friends. A person with these kind of skills can come in handy if you have an idea but don't have to skills to actually make it yourself.
