No longer did you mass your force into a single unit and flung it at the enemy, succeed or die in a single battle, and went from there. The advent of things like railroads, greater crop yields, and simply much more massive armies meant that things have to spread out, and you now have fronts and spread out offensives and battles that last months.
No one human can keep track of all that, they way they could in an ancient or even Napoleonic battle, no matter how much of a military genius they are.
