The whole thing about most of the original 13 states having official, tax-supported churches, which would completely violate the 1st amendment.

Dude, this is well known. The Bill of Rights only really started applying to state governments in the 1920s, with Gitlow vs New York. Go look up "Incorporation Doctrine". It is quite literally something that progressive judges on the supreme court made up.

The Bill of Rights, as the Founding Fathers understood it, applied to the Federal Government only. Your rights vis a vis your state government was a matter between you and the government and constitution of that state, and the two didn't really interact.

You even have Supreme Court cases upholding the notion, most notably the Cruikshank case.

i read just today an article in a german newspaper about americas love affair with guns.
it said that the whole "militia" part was seen as the right interpretation of the 2nd amendment and that the us supreme court decision in 2003 (or something like that, roughly ten years ago) really put forward the idea, that every american has the right to own guns to defend his home primarily.

The 10th amendment clearly states that powers can be prohibited to the States.

The 2nd amendment clearly states the right belongs to the people.

No incorporation required.

In addition, many states have explicit declarations of rights to bear arms in their own constitutions.

And to think that the founding fathers would want states regulating arms any more than they'd want the feds regulating arms is quite frankly retarded.
