The Republic was an ineffective and corrupt organization who didn't even have a military to speak of to protect it's member planets until the Clone Wars.

The Galactic Empire spawned out of the Republic seeking to put an end to war and corruption for good and finally bring peace and order to the galaxy using overwhelming military strength. That is until a bunch of rebel dindus got mad that they couldn't break the law anymore and became terrorist and started blowing shit up.

Palpatine ended the weak republic that relied on the Jedi order to lead it's armies. He then goes on to create a new model army based on technology and promotes officers based on merit. Frank Herbert's protagonist in Dune is sort of based on T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia.

I don't know that Luke is inspired on him though, but that's what the picture implies.

The Jedi gladly supported a corrupt government that supplied them with young boys to 'train.' The Jedi would go after any force sensitives that refused to join them. They build their temples on Sith Shrines as a form of desecration and monopolized knowledge of the force and only taught their members enough that would keep them loyal to the order. They prevented their members from indulging in hobbies outside of the order, they punished them for using the force for personal use or if it didn't benefit the jedi or the 'republic.' They did the empire's dirty work and played mind tricks on people to get what they wanted. They denied their members the ability to have families and that drove many jedi out of the order, only to be hunted down by their former brothers for 'falling to the dark side.' The Jedi were responsible for a great civil war between all the force sensitive factions which resulted in massive genocide of non jedi force users, the only faction that survived was the Sith by going underground. Jedi whine about the great jedi genocide but disregard the crimes of the jedi against the sith in the past. Worst of all the Jedi feigned humility and lied to the citizens of the republic.

The Sith on the other hand, let their members engage in their passions, they let them use the force however they wanted. Their biggest mistake was becoming as authoritarian as the Jedi when they hunted them down.

The Dark Side of the Force is not the bad side, neither side is.

I choose the Sith.

So what, that book can't ever be represented in film wholeheartedly anyway, people suck Jardowarsky's dick so hard and the movie wasn't ever made, it's very easy to say that "this movie that wasn't made would have been much better based on the concept art." The grass is always greener, especially if the grass is only conceptual and is hyped relentlessly without merit. Lynch did as good a job as anybody else would have. Jardo would have turned Dune into some cross-dressing "so surrealist lmao" shitfest anyway.

The books are the only true canon. As far as I understand into the legacy era, the Sith still exist and the Third Jedi purge nearly destroys the New Jedi Order. We can delve deeper into this with Darth Traya's prophecies.

Despite Revan being considered gone from the galaxy he still left a wound in the force. Yuuzhan Vong also had considerable capabilities that if centered could destroy either Sith or Jedi faction despite being secluded on their living world. Xim the Despot altered Celestial inventions that still sruvived up until Palpatine's final death some time after the Battle of Yavin.

All in all it seems like the Sith would be my faction.

In the end the Jedi merely wrought more chaos, destroyed entire civilizations - devolved countless species and finally destroyed the last Mandalorian warrior. In the end the Sith had it right all along, growth of the individual despite the cost of others (jedi).

Since I'm a white guy, I think I would have limited opportunities for advancement with the affirmative-action social engineering going on in the Republic. I dunno. I can really see the plight of both causes. While the Jedi are heralded as "good" which can be seen through their alleged morality, I identify strongly with the Sith's drive for self preservation and strength. Probably would be a Jedi converted to the dark side, raised on "morality" and such and willing to defend it, but ultimately out for my own personal gain.
