I'm an inch above my nation's average height, but I personally believe that while taller people are more physically endearing for public office, it should really come down to your character.
Another point for you. What about connecting with voters? If the hopeful candidate is a full 5-7 inches taller than the average constituent, they can either be seen as larger-than-life (to the idiot voter) or they can make the vote feel insecure and threatened (base human instinct).
Because of this, I think that there is a much more powerful connection with the voter when the candidate is on their level, literally. The eye contact, the physical link through a handshake or arm on a shoulder, it's that much more real and personal for the voter.
