Byzantines, Spanish, and Franks all dominate games due to pallies and valuable unique units.

Persians can come too.

Vikings are good for an early castle age rush on water maps.

Gotta be the Teutonic Knight, the Teuton's defensive bonus' and cheap Farms make them one of the Overall best civilizations in the game.
I am also fond of the celts with their quick Infantry and Long range Siege weapons. The Franks and the Japanese are good civs too, all the civilizations in the game are really well balanced in my opinion.

Naw dude I'd just vary the ratio a bit if I ran into trouble.

Only issue I run into with that setup is the fuckin Celts who take very little missile damage. That and maybe onagers protected by pikes. In that case I'd have to charge with the infantry but I'd loose enough me that I'd have to stop and heal up/ wait for reinforcements.

There was a unit that was like a catapult but it fired arrows.. that one ripped 10 monks in half by it self.

Honestly I always preferred AoE3 (yes yes, burn the heretic /pol/) because each Empire was actually unique in how they were played. More unique units too.

Bitch please. There is nothing compared to MOO2, there are thousand of strategies to win. Including kikery and blitzkrieg. Unlike CIV you can't solely rely on short-term decisions, which makes it really difficult on hard mode.

Depends on the map. If you are playing BF then longbows can sit at the choke points and murder anything that tries to move through. If your micro is decent you can take out onagers before they wreck you

I got in my head that I was going to replay AOE 1 two months ago and damn, the nostalgia is great but holy fuck you can tell it was made in the 90's, the controls are clunky as fuck. I managed to get through half the game (had to be drunk off my arse to stand it) so I decided to instead do an AOE 2 playthrough and it's still as fun as ever.

It was still alright I guess, but they gimped up trading, still had that shitty settlement mechanic from AoM, and the combat quickly turned to cannon rushing in pretty much all the games I played of it (admittedly, not that much).
Also AoE2 had campaigns based off real history, whereas AoE3 had a campaign that was straight up retarded.

That's why I rarely played multiplayer. I prefer to have a protracted fight, tech up completely then crush everything with super units. In multiplayer a lot of the time the fight is over quite quickly. Getting to the 4th age didn't always happen, and you virtually never got to the 5th.

I wanna USE Imperial Gendarmes, not just stare at the tech tree and see that I COULD.

The Huns had that special unit that did extra Damage to buildings and were made from the castle. You get fucking spoiled in the Hun learning campaign because if you get a castle built anywhere near the enemies base you can just spam those Tarkans and wreck shit
