I actually think the new way is neat. You have to make a lot of notations for bigger claculations with the old system. Here you just add up until you reach the number you're substracting from.

Not saying that common core isn't retarded but I don't think that this way of doing substractions is entirely without merit.

if you're "good at math," then yes. that's what you do. if you're "not good at math," you just memorize an addition table from repetitive practice. and then as soon as school is no longer forcing them to do the repetition, they simply forget how to do math at all, or use calculators (or these days, their phones) any time they need to add two and two.

I'm a 2012 graduate. 22 years of age, so my high school experience is still fresh.

A lot of assignments were like this. A lot of the teachers were ill-equipped and relied on outdated teaching websites or their textbooks. The only teachers who put a good amount of effort into explaining what they were teaching were the younger teachers.

A sad part of the school was that they laid off a lot of the younger teachers. One year I had a lovely teacher for Science class who knew where to get information and knew what she was talking about. The next year I had an old windbag reading straight out of the textbooks, and who's only explanations came out of repeated teachings of said textbook.

Only until I reached university did I find teachers who knew how to engage a classroom and who took the time to explain what they were talking about fully. Gotta love them professors.

Also fuck, ask me anything you want about my high school experience. Since, after all, I got to experience the affect liberals had on schools.

This is all it takes to be a teacher nowadays. No one wants to step up to the plate and acknowledge that teachers aren't to be praised and rewarded for wanting to teach; they should be praised for doing a good job.

Else, they're just government workers reiterating textbooks to kids. I understand that those with expertise choose to attend university. I can find many university students who are more qualified to teach a classroom than your average grunt with a chalkboard, however.

That's 100% of the point. Researchers have discovered that this is how people do math in their heads (it's how I do). So teaching them to do so directly cuts out the intermediate steps of countless hours of memorization.

Male teachers are just as bad and feel just as entitled for praise.

We need new teachers in general.

There are also people who teach just so they can be allowed to coach. Every coach/teacher I knew was incompetent, and I'm sure you guys knew some yourself. Only good guy was possibly the volleyball coach.
