he started going to aa meetings because he thought he was an alcoholic.

i laughed at him and told him, "to be an alcoholic you have to be powerless to stop drinking. have you stopped drinking>"

he said he stopped drinking about a year prior.

so i told him, "so you hold the power to stop, which you've proven for a year, and yet you say you're an alcoholic. strange."

he went and bought a bottle of gin that night and we got shit tanked.

Eh, I'm a recovering alcoholic and I don't necessarily agree that alcoholism specifically is a disease.

There are genetic factors involved with addiction. If you have addiction/alcoholism in your family, there's a pretty good probability that you could become an addict of some sort.

Then again, not everyone that has these genes turns out to be an addict or alcoholic.

Either way, people aren't powerless. I went to AA at the start of my recovery but I didn't agree that I was powerless. By my own willpower I've been sober for over 3 1/2 years.

I would totally only drink on the weekends if I didn't see images and shit when I closed my eyes at night and/or didn't wake up every hour from nightmares when I tried to sleep.

Not even a schizo or anything, but alcohol lets me pass out peacefully instead of having to put up with nightmare bullshit.

But I would say without alcohol you'd lose a great deal of world culture. Not just the alcohol itself. But the music, literature, art, created by people who got their best ideas while having a few.

So what would the long term effects of having like 6 or 7 shots worth of booze on Fridays and Saturdays only? Of course the effects of longterm binge drinking are always talked about, but I never heard what happens if you only do it on the weekends. Seems kind of strange that colleges don't cover this part of drinking when it is probably the most common on campus.

Going to a summer cottage with friends and drinking for 3-4 days is fun.

Going to the store in the morning to buy another case of beer just so you will get through the day without the shakes and night terrors is not fun.

"Alcoholism" is a broad and often misused term.

I wouldn't consider severe alcoholism a disease, rather, a self induced medical condition that has made physical changes to your body.

Oddly enough out of all drugs out there, alcohol withdrawal is one of the most dangerous.
