This article goes more into detail, but doesn't mention the guy's race.

But the guy has a pretty long rap sheet. Of course, arson is generally a white crime anyway and he doesn't have it on his record. Given none of the churches had extensive damage iirc, it certainly leans to being a fake hate crime.
