Why do Looks matter so much to women?

Is it biological, in other words, men are naturally very visual and lookist and therefore, women must adapt to fulfill the man's desires?

Or is the importance of female beauty merely a social construct that can be changed if we make an effort?

They really don't matter as much. A man is really judged on his overall worth as a leader and/or provider. You can get away with being average so long as you display some attributes of 'success'.

Women on the other hand are judged solely for their ability to provide healthy offspring... Hence the trend for selecting attractive women.

It might be a little biological, kind of like how female chimps always groom other chimps and stuff, but fashion/clothing/makeup and stuff is basically like a hobby and it's pushed on to girls.
