Why is /vr/ based on console generations? Something like 15 years would make a lot more sense. It makes no sense that a game released in 2003 on the Dreamcast is retro, but a game released on the PS2 in 2000 isn't.

Maybe because the PS2 was a immensely popular gaming system found in pretty much every household. Big developers still make games for the console to this day. Only the indiest of the indie develop for the Dreamcast, and the Dreamcast has always been a underground nugget with very little to its name.

Because generations have far more to do with design philosophy, popular trends, aesthetic, gameplay decisions, and a slew of other game qualities than date alone. Having retro arbitrarily end at say 2000 means you can discuss Banjo Kazooie but not Banjo Tooie for instance.

It was a dvd player mainly. barely anyone cared about the games outside of fifa and gta as the software sales show.

Just EA with yearly sports releases for the south americans. That is all support the system had for years.

Well, they pirated like crazy too, but we can look at what percentage of the market moderns consoles the third world is, it's really big and where the disconnection between consoles/software sales.
