the scene is not for profit. people who make money from piracy are looked down upon, but it usually boils down to referals from file hosts, plastering their forum/tracker/site with ads, charging member fees, that stuff. offline piracy (bootleg DVDs) used to be lucrative, but that age is over.

other "hacking" that yields money is usually very sophisticated and highly illegal, like maintaining botnets and renting them out, spamming, phishing, carding, ransoming sites (threatening DDoS) or users (via ransomware), etc.

English is not my native language, but yes I meant hacking. Why do they use meanings like spamming, phishing, etc. How those things bring money ?

spamming: someone wants to sell penis pills, you charge them money to send out 10 million e-mails to addresses you've illegally obtained.
phishing: two ways. either you use their e-banking credentials to access their bank account. or you just assemble a profile and sell it. the more info a profile has (name, address, date of birth, banks, credit cards, job, pictures), the more it is worth, since it can be used to impersonate people, create fake IDs and access finances. you usually gather a whole list from your phishing operation and then sell it wholesale.
