Mysticism, secret societies, esoteric imagery, exotic rituals and incantations, ancient entities of power, unseen forces, the occult in general. All of it.

It's great fiction even if its all bogus, but a suspension of disbelief makes it more fascinating. I think it's cool how much of it spring from the actual religious beliefs of ancient peoples, where the history ends and the confabulation begins isn't always so obvious, but as a subject its endlessly entertaining.

It's also interesting to see how much of those ancient esoteric religious symbols made its way through thousands of years to us today. You see a lot of references to the eye of horus today in pop media, almost as much as the Freeman Eye of Providence.
