For one, we have government subsidies to ensure that food is available. Sex is an entirely different animal. You can't really directly compare the two.

The complaint was that something that someone has a natural urge to acquire has value.
You could say we're exploiting a human's urge to be warm by selling clothes.
Hell, if you wanna be this dispassionate about it, prostitutes are actually meeting the urge so cheaply it borders on charity - a few hundred dollars for a fuck and walking away, or a commitment to a relationship and raising any offspring for sex.

A few hundred dollars for an hour's work. That is an incredible amount of money. One could sustain themselves on very little total labor that way. Most working people have to do a lot more to earn that much money.
