Can you learn programming if you don't have aspergers?

I keep getting the feeling that learning to program is my ticket to fame and fortune. How hard is it to pick up a language like Python?

I've been programming since I started high school. I'm in my 5th year of CS on the uni now and I think that programming alone won't help you all that much. If you want to be good, you should pick up something else also. For example learn to program, but also learn basics of automation or EE or something similar. You would be surprised how often are these things combined and being a decent programmer while also knowing something else is the way to go. Maybe even economics if that's what you think you'd be good at? Pure programming is for autists and easily outsourcable.

All you need is willpower, that requirement never ends. I know x86/c/c++/python/perl and some scripting languages. Don't find myself building many things because of my depression.

Think of it like this. Even though we all know English, only few of us write books or interesting articles.

It is not.

I had a year of Java under my belt, so it was easy. It was just a matter of Googling how to do the things I wanted to.

Yes. It is just a matter of giving yourself time to learn it and taking the time to learn it. Just like anything else.

The picture is true. If you don't have a deep love for machines and really want to get down to the atomic level, then programming isn't the best field to get into. At the higher levels (looking at code in a more abstract manner) you face great competition. This competition ranges from normies who are extroverted social kings, to Indians and Russians who are prepared to work for minimum wage.

Code is also much different than it was in the early 2000's. Now it is about building blocks (objects) that you stick together. Is no different to building with LEGO. Find the right LEGO and you're all set.

Learnt C first, and x86 on the side. Then C++.

If I could do it again, it would be in the same order. Reason for this is in my time in online communities, those who learnt x86 first picked up poor programming practices, their transition to the next level was incomplete. and those who did not learn x86 struggled with complex data manipulation (bits/raw pointer usage/etc). Then learning C++ before you master C is important. The switch can give you a headache, it is a big paradigm shift.

gives you a good basis on hexidecimal and gb machine code.

all you need is the decrypted rom, notepad, and paint.

this will get your head in the right place. if you still want to program, learn c.

That's a pretty rough start though. Don't get me wrong I started pretty similarly but compared to starting with python(for example) this is pretty hard to get through. Chances are he won't make it through, on the other hand if he does, then everything else will be a piece of cake(other than maybe functional/logic programming since that's another huge paradigm shift).

You don't have to be aspie, really. What you need, I've found, is a skill sorta like meditation; you just need to consciously work on getting into a state where you block out the rest of the world and focus on building the program. I think it's a learnable skill tbh.

Don't bother with python. It's easy in the wrong ways; there's too much of a risk that you'll get stuck with an immature notion of computation itself, and tbh once you get the sense for what computation actually is, porting your mental model from one language to another is really easy.

Honestly, depending on your definitions of "fame and fortune", marketing is probably where it's at. (I.e., you can be a shit programmer but a good marketer and earn a fortune. But definitely not the other way around.)

People will tell you python is easy, but honestly that's just because you can get by for a little longer without understanding what's going really on. It's a very forgiving language, in the sense that it allows you to be rather sloppy with the syntax, but the drawback is that common mistakes or typos have a valid interpretation with a completely different meaning than the one intended. TBH python is best learned when you have someone to ask why your code is suddenly acting weird as fuck. If you're on you own, learn a grammer nazi language like java.

To answer your actual question, the spergers is an advantage but not required. All you need is patience, focus and rigid thinking (in the sense that you can reason about programs as you would about mechanical contraptions. Don't make the mistake of thinking of programming as a form of communication).

name one of these infinite algorithms we haven't solved. it can't be obscure either, it has to be relevant to the masses tomorrow.

Everything most programmers need has been done.

For storing data (arrays,link lists,binary trees,hash tables), along with their non-blocking counter parts for parallel computing

Path finding (Dijkstra and all its derivatives)
Image recognition (deep learning/ANN)

Software patterns. They too have been discovered, everything new is a mixture of existing ones for current-gen architectures.

unless you are working on next-gen technology, the need to make brand new algorithms is limited.
