It's pretty damn autistic to think that there was a conspiracy to keep her "desperate" -- she was a millionaire many times over even before she started acting thanks to her parents, and after Star Wars she never needed to work again. She hasn't worked much because she really hasn't needed to, what with being a best-selling author several times over. That said, it also wasn't industry compassion that prevented the press from getting her story. She was just smart enough not to do dumb shit in Hollywood where everyone with a camera can see.
