Not OP, but I always sit in the back of the room because I want to be alone. I answer the prof's questions, I ask pertinent questions, and they always come to see me to see if I'm ok, to talk to me about research projects, etc. Sometimes I don't study and only get an ok grade and they're surprised because they expect better. You just say it was an accident and move on.
Then I wanted to go for a double degree with another university and needed three letters of recommendation. I literally just had to send three emails, asking to meet three profs about this. I didn't even have awesome grades. One didn't even want to meet, he just wrote me one. The two others wanted to know what I'd be doing and such. I even got to write one of my own recommendation letters...
So yeah OP, you can stick to the babby problems europeans use to make fun of you, or you can see the benefits of doing problems that are at your level AND have someone who could vouch for you for whatever project you want to go for.
