Has anyone suffered from chronic pain? What's it like on a scale of how much it fucks up your life? Apparently ~50% of people in the UK will experience it as some point.

Scientists have discovered that people with more opiate receptors in the brain have higher pain thresholds than people with less.
It is hoped that they can find ways of increasing opiate receptor numbers in the brain perhaps through drug treatments or behavioural treatments such as exercise.
Opiate receptors respond to the body's natural opiates, the endorphins, as well as foreign opiates such as morphine.
It is possible that increasing brain receptor numbers will be a better treatment for people suffering from chronic pain than the current method of prescribing pain killers, which can require higher doses over time and risk addiction.
