The only kind-of surprising thing is that this works with spin as well as position, but since all quantum operators are basically equal, it's not that surprising if you know your basic QM.
There's a cool series of papers from a decade or two ago about coherent quantum control of chemical reactions. I think it was Moshe Shapiro and Paul Brumer. Been a while since I studied that stuff. Anyway, the idea is that you can use lasers in this manner to select specific products in reactions by controlling tunnelling. Every year I expect to see someone in that field win a Nobel.
