Computer Science not STEM??

Does /sci/ know why Computer Science hasn't been technically considered a part of STEM until quite recently?

Most colleges still count it as a Liberal Art, which makes little sense because it's almost all Math, and it's tied closely with Engineering and Technology.

If anyone has a reason why, I'd really like to know and discuss why it should/shouldn't be counted as a STEM field.

Probably because computer science lacked the complexity and theory required to be considered a science. It's been quite long time nothing but a tool for ingenious people to create tools which themselves can be useful. But it's been more of an art than a science. And it's not really because computers themselves have changed that much, but rather due to the internet.

I think it became a science when computer programs became so complicated that it would be practical to have dedicated and educated people doing the programming. Then there's of course the fact that things need to be recognized to be important, and until recently computer science hasn't been thought to matter that much. Mostly because devices were more or less the product of EE. Later CS became implented in EE, and now CS is taking over tasks of EE - and multiple other fields.

I don't know where you live, but I have never seen any school offer a BA in computer science. This isn't a recent thing.

My school has Math, Physics, Chem, Comp Sci, etc in the same school as liberal arts. School of Arts and Sciences is what the branch is called where I go.

My school does both a BA and BS in comp sci. But most people do the BS.

False. generally CS has it's own school or it's in a college of engineering.

Probably in your shit-tier school CS is in a college like that.

For the CS page: programming, data structures, algorithms, numerical methods, and parallel sections are the most relevant. The rest is skippable if you don't have a deep interest in CS.

Dude, what. Just because 5/30 classes are in the math department doesn't even make this remotely true.
Most CS degrees only require basic calc, stats, and maybe linear algebra. That's it.

Tangentially related, but I might have to pick between combinatorics, graph theory, and abstract algebra before the end of my CS degree. I'm doing an AI/logic/math track. Which should I choose?

This. All tHe CS majors at my college got BTFO of discrete math which is just baby tier logic and proofs
