Hi /sci/.
I want to build a space suit.
Not the helmet part but the body suit.
I want it to theoretically work.

Do any of you have any knowledge or resources for this? I know how to construct a garment but what I need is a resource for materials and other information specific to space.

I will post my progress here if you help!

You can't buy one. The cost of manufacturing and maintenance are between 2 and 12 million dollars. You should specify exactly what you want, since there are various types of suites: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_suit

Actually the Russians have sold surplus suits in the past. And I believe a couple of old NASA ones have entered private hands. So it is possible to buy one. I don't think any of the ones in private hands are in working order though

Yeah, sure you could buy some as memorabilia, but as you said, those aren't approved suits to use in space. At least no without proper maintenance.

IEVA would be the starting point though really EVA is the goal.

I don't want to build a preexisting design. I am looking for a in depth explanation on the parts so I can engineer something different.

Also I am thinking the cost should be significantly lower for materials than they were 50 years ago, and new fiber textile technology should make it slimmer or At least more efficient.

Don't you understand space suits aren't just cloth pieced together? They have a lot of systems built into them.

Can't you just buy a pressure suit or similar? Something that's used for diving or flying.
That should work until you overheat or the suit gets damaged.

I know, it's fine. I'm from a family of engineers who know a bit in how to do these things. Right now I am focusing on the textile parts, the soft materials.

Pressure suit is a good base, but the material may not protect against everything. Thanks for the suggestion.

You need some radiation-isolating material on top of that. Look up what NASA uses, that information should be available.

Nothing will protect you from everything.
What do you even want to achieve? Do you just want something so you don't die a miserable death when your spacecraft loses atmosphere or do you want EVA or the like?

Yes I want EVA ultimately.

My goal is to explore space and not look like a marshmallow. I realize how unrealistic this is but why not make it my life's work?

EVA where? You'll face different conditions depending on whether you're on LEO, on the moon, around Jupiter or on the photosphere.

You don't even necessarily need a pressure suit. Something elastic is basically enough, i.e. a space activity suit.

It's not that it's difficult it's just not feasible for an individual to make one, you'd be pouring a crapton of money into making a suit that you realistically can't find any use for anyway.
Time-wise and money-wise you're much better off doing something else. Imagine what else you can do with $2+ million
