Another fun example of fun publishers being fun: Szamuely's book on étale fundamental groups used to be a set of lecture notes, freely and legally available to all students on his web page. CUP provuded the following service to humanity: they started selling paper versions of these notes (virtually unchanged, aside from one of those ugly gray covers with red stripes on it), and had him take the notes down, as they now own the copyright. Now the notes are only available legally to people willing and able to fork over the absurd fee CUP undoubtedly asks for it, providing Szamuely with beer money every now and then. Can someone justify this for me?
