I could be more specific by saying that humans evolved from a monkey which branched off into hominids and Old World monkeys. And that this monkey is by definition a monkey because it was both a descendant of the last common ancestor of Old World monkeys and New World monkeys and an ancestor of the Old World monkeys.
This means that the monkey we evolved from is not the ancestor of ALL monkeys. So it is not the thing which monkeys (meaning all monkeys) and humans evolved from. That would be the last common ancestor of all monkeys.
