Depends on how quickly and desperately I need the answer. If the answer is "eh, whatever," sell the NaOH to the chinese, use the money to have the sample analyzed.

If I need the answer right the fuck now, pour the NaOH on whoever knows the answer and keep them from washing it off until they've told me.

you mix the NaOH with the HCL until the solution is ALMOST, but NOT QUITE, as salty as seawater. the gold standard for this method is to have a sample of recently harvested seawater alongside to compare, along with a glass of red wine for palate cleansing
