It isn't true that the Church was agaisnt Galileo. Pope was, much of the clergy was, but none of their reactions were official Church statements, since these apply only to matters of faith and morals, spoken officially by the pope.
Galileo's work (or any scientific work which isn't morally wrong, like human experimentation, for that) is neither about faith nor about morals so it doesn't count.
Galileo got arrested not for his science, but for pissing off the pope. His death wasn't justified and the Church doesn't say it was.
