What classes to pick in a chem. minor?

Hey /sci/,

So I'm starting all over studying maths, and I want to pick chemistry as a minor. I already did Analysis I and LinAlg I, so first semester maths is gonna be easy for me. I can choose between:

- general and anorganic chem. for minor (12 credits)
- introduction to organic chem. (6 credits)
- introduction to physical chem. (8 credits)

What's the best to start out with?

Out of curiosity, why? There is very little intersection between chemistry and pure math.

So what is the best module to start out with, anorganic, organic, or physical chemistry?

best module is the first one, but it is basically "how to do calculations" the class

By anorganic I suppose you mean inorganic?

If you're in to math then you might like that class because it involves group theory.

Physical chem is a physics class. Maybe you'll like that because it's math intensive.

Math can't help you in organic chemistry. You should stay away from that unless you're looking for an experience that makes you feel helpless.

Not necessarily, chemistry is a very broad field and you can make it math intensive if you wanted

Piss off, its easy. Like 95% of the undergrad course is fully explained by pretty basic stereoelectronic heuristics.

General chem is half a survey of various concepts (acid-base, atomic orbitals, thermochemistry, electrochemistry, gas kinetics) at a very basic level which you would undoubtedly encounter elsewhere and half a remedial "mathematical methods" course. Lotta time multiplying by 1.

Your mathematical background would serve you well in physical chem (did you know QM is essentially applied hilbert space theory?)

Inorganic is generally very boring, an exhaustive descriptive survey of the periodic table groups. Don't even bother unless it lists pchem as a prereq (this allows for more advanced and quantitative material)

Organic is FUN.
