Why when working out the fraction for two separate shapes, you don't add the denominator?

9/6 is the correct answer, but why isn't it logically 9/12?

because it takes 6 picese to make one whole, not 12

if the denominator was 12, the circle would be cut into 12 slices

OP you're right. It's 9/12 of 2 circles.
(9/12) * 2 = 9 / (12/2) = 9/6 = 3/2.
