Hai friends, not a sci fag but i was in the shower trying to figure out might happen in the event of a gamma ray burst,

If one was traveling towards our solar system, what indication would we have that it was travelling toward us?

If the star was 10,000 light years away and we observe the star explode, what happens next? Surely we cant see the burst travelling toward us since it itself is travelling at the speed of light?

If we are able to observe the burst then that means light from it has already reached us.

Thanks, so at the moment we have the possiblity of seeing the star *explode*, if the burst was travelling toward us, we ded anyway? Makes sense i guess

Short GRBs seem to have preliminary signs. Precursor bursts are believed to be interactions with the crust under massive tidal forces as the neutron stars spiral in. They're generally minutes ahead but it's something.

Like you've heard the saying that if the sun exploded we wouldn't know for 6 or 7 minutes? That's because its 6 or 7 light minutes away.

But that doesn't mean we'd see it right away then 6 minutes later be dead, no we wouldn't know it all and by the time we did see it we'd already be doomed.

No information of any kind moves faster than light at its max speed so if you can't see it yet nothing else from it has reached you yet either. (Technically neutrinos from supernovas can actually reach us before the light but only because neutrinos hardly interact with matter so they escape the mass of the dying star faster than photons, they do not travel through space FTL though.)

I didnt think about neutrinos, i guess it would be a therotical best bet for an earley detection system, not that it would matter heh
