What does /sci/ prefer for statistics? R, MATLAB, Python with NumPy & SciPy, or Julia?

Senior data analyst at tech firm. Honestly, I've used R and Python like once every two months for something weird, almost anything useful for business decisions can be done in excel. I'm sure some scientists find more use out of other things though

I have an R script open on my desktop right now. I don't know how many times I've seen colleagues mess around in excel for hours manipulating data that i Know I could do in three lines in R.

julia is a little to young to take over for R. lots of things change with each update which is a massive down side compared to R's stability.

that, ggplot, and the massive R package environment all mean that it will be a while before massive mainstream adoption of Julia.

it will be a long long time before julia is taught to undergradsgrad students in place of R.

i use R for data processing/munging and plotting.

i do hierarchical bayesian modeling so i end up just using stan or bugs/jags for any of my heavy lifting/mcmc stuff. R is just for correctly formatting for those or plotting (e.g. ggplot).

R seems interesting, but the idea of using a 'product' like MATLAB or Mathematica seems limiting. I might look into NumPy and SciPy tho.

Sad reality. Go to school for years, only end up needing what you learned in the most basic classes.

It's like actuaries who have to pass a battery of stats tests, then end up only calculating means and variances, and maybe a line through some data.
