OP here, do not know which is the best or if you use another program, have willingness to learn to use Excel but more than I want to invest my time at best. I am a student of physics.

You're doing physics, so graphs are important, and excel can't do graphs to anywhere near a good enough level. Using excel is fine for most other stuff. I'm a physics undergrad and we mostly use origin at my uni, sometimes use excel for spreasheet stuff.

My OpenOffice Calc crashes when I try to make 400000 rows with 7 columns of iterative calculations. Any solutions? Should I just divide them into two files?

used Excel and OriginLab and studying physics. Origin is better by far. Can't find a good torrent so you might have to fork out the money. I'm sure there's some freeware but I haven't seen any

LibreOffice Calc will do everything you'd need Excel for.
Spreadsheets are pretty inferior to everything else though.
OriginLab completely bites the dust once you know how to work with python and the few important modules.
Physicist here.

Is alright man.
MATLAB sucks balls as a programming language.
It's not very hard though, maybe a bit unweildy compared to alternatives.
Any introductory course will also not be of a very tough level.
It's a language that is fast at matrix math, and tries (badly) to have both the benefits of Mathematica and traditional languages/environments.

To add:
Between the clunkiness and standard plotting functions you'll be working much more imperatively.
In python it's easier to generalise using OOP, and you can integrate the math and statistics functionality with a broader scope of things.

Definitely learn Fortran, that and Python actually integrate well together. So Fortran can do all the heavy numerical work and Python can do everything else.

Not exactly the same thing as I'm a CS student, but when we work with large sets of data we use excel to view .csv (comma separated values) files and you can do some cool stuff with that without having to code too much.

We don't use excel to code or do analysis, but sometimes it helps to have a nice visual of the data you're analyzing

except it's piss easy to do [W,Z] = function(x,y). it also is more maintainable that way, because you can tell at a glance what variable the output ended up in
