How would I go about convincing a neurologist or some other expert on brain activity to let me be a test subject in a recreation of the experiment from altered states?

Instead of that mushroom shit we would use DMT. It would be in a controlled environment where we would test to see if the sensory deprivation tank enhances the experience of DMT or otherwise changes it in some way.

My brain activity would be monitored throughout and studied.
