I just had a debate in Facebook with someone that believes that vaccines cause autism. I had heard about it before but I was not prepared for the utter stupidity of these anti-vaxxers. What is your opinion on the matter?

Both my kids have all their scheduled vax except rotavirus and chicken pox.

Those two vax in particular dont really have a useful reason to get them considering the chances of serious damage from either virus are low and the vax themselves arent deactivated - merely attenuated.
I think this is a fair enough reason not to get those certain vax but for the rest it is important to be immune to typhoid, polio, measles, whooping cough, etc.

Please explain how these studies worked. Did they gather 100 people who were vaccinated, look at them and say "well, he doesn't look autistic"?

Whatever studies you're talking about are probably just as fraudulent. If person A has a disposition for X and vaccines trigger X, then how could you "prove" this isn't true if you don't even know what this disposition is?

It's not so much about it being a zero negative effect as it is an increased positive effect in the long run.

Whether the vaccines themselves will cause irrevocable damage or whether they will cause some reversible damage for longer lasting positive good is the question at hand.

What is the chance a baby will die if exposed to the pathogen without a vaccine? What is the chance a baby will be significantly harmed by a vaccine? Further: what is the chance that a baby will be exposed to this pathogen? If it is likely AND if the chance it will not be harmed by a vaccine is relatively low, then vaccination is necessary.

i think there should be a middle way attitude towards the vaccines. Totally rejecting them is just retarded because if u r in an area infected with small pox supposedly then not taking the vaccine is just crazy but then there are vaccines which are not useful on a long term basis . Just because that statement applies to vaccines doesn't mean because it may/may not apply to other phenomena they're one and the same.

(1) I am going to jog because I am too fat.

The justifications in both of these cases are the same, but the actions performed are vastly different. Does this mean the argument doesn't apply to either case? No, it means one person is using this argument incorrectly.
