The pic shows that both the vena cava and the aorta are in the middle on top of the spine. Lying on the right side would have removed the pressure just as well as on the left side.

I must have miscommunicated in the OP, shifting it off the aorta as well.

Also, if we are only shifting it off the vena cava, why not also care about the aorta which brings nutrients to the uterus. Could gravity play a factor in this. That it is harder for blood to come back to heart than it is to carry the blood to the rest of the body?
