.. they didn't actually detect a Higgs boson. That's the whole point of what Unzicker is saying. Particles have been "discovered" but they haven't actually been detected. Well I'm not a particle physicist, but I'll give it a shot anyway. For starters it's erroneous from the out set to ask "where do particles get their mass from?" and expect an answer to involve the Higgs mechanism since the Higgs mechanism is supposed to describe where the mass of certain scalar fields comes from. Basically when you break a continuous symmetry you get a massless excitation, called a "Goldstone mode" (or boson). However in a gauge theory we can make a gauge transformation which removes the Goldstone mode, when we do that we find that our Lagrangian now contains massive vector field whose particles have mass M.

So where do these particles get there mass? Well their underlying fields all have their Goldstone modes removed and turned massive though combination with a gauge field when ever the symmetry of their Lagrangian is broken.

The vacuum catastrophe has a lot of assumptions going into it that we don't have much reason to take to be true other than being the only way to try and compare a measured vacuum energy density through the cosmological constant and what is predicted from QFT. If any of these unfounded assumptions is erroneous, then the comparison falls apart and the vacuum catastrophe vanishes.

Think about the code of any particle accelerator. Its made to see things that aren't there. Give the results of any accelerator run to 20 different phycisists and they will invent 20 new particles.

Yes, just like every other nuclear/particle physics experiment since the birth of those fields, how do you think the nucleus was first discovered? Rutherford shot loads of alpha Particles at some shit thin gold foil, noticed that the majority passed right on threw but that some were scattered and an even small few were backscattered. From that he could infer that the nucleus was a very dense, positively charged object, he didn't get a magnifying glass a look at a lump of uranium. I honestly have no idea how someone can, with a straight face, claim there's a difference between a discovery and an inference with good statistics.
