Hi /sci/,
I'm not as smart as you guys, but what do you think about CRISPR-Cas9 technology? I find it super cool, like you will be able to make your kid smarter, custom height, eye colour even predisposition to become a pro athlete, etc. They have already tested it on mice/monkeys and changed the fur colours. And even on human embryos. It's pretty fascinating if you ask me.
Also, maybe a dumb question, but if they are able to change these things it mean your kid isn't your kid anymore? I mean if you DNA test your kid it will be not as accurate as before (near 100%), I guess it will depends on how much you modify the DNA.

That's wrong though, paternity tests and forensics only look for a pattern of short tandem repeats, not the whole genome.

CRISPR is a really cool technology. George Chruch just published some really slick stuff about using CRISPR as a means to grow human organs inside pigs. As far as human germline editing goes, feasibility is a long way off. That Chinese group had a lot of issues with nonspecificity of insertions in the embryonic genome. The scientific community is super skittish about the ethical ramifications too. We're a ways out from consumer level design your own baby.

What kind of ethical obstacle could we find to growing just extra organs ? It would save so many lives and probalby really hinder "live" organ trafficking too right ? Like going from a black market situation (not talking about hospitals obviously) to a more controlled environment

Every time I think about those issues the pros always seem to outweigh the cons by a landslide, although I can definitely see some room for fuckery with all this.

Well if you think about all the money we could save on so many medical issues by having genetically enhanced people, it seems like a fairly reasonable move to make at some point. I mean it sure as hell beats raising handicapped people in a world that never really tries to ease them into our society anyway. I'm absolutely not saying they shouldn't be allowed to live, but who wouldn't rather have a healthy kind instead of a sick one, or having the guarantee that they won't (or are less likely to) develop life threatening diseases later in life ?

I also believe it would take decades if not a century before this is no longer a taboo subject but I suppose it's going to happen eventually.

The organ-growing wouldn't generate so much controversy. It's the germline editing of humans that's got everybody so antsy. There's a worldwide moratorium on germline modifications, but China has a storied history of not giving a fuck.
