I'm writing a scifi novel. It's got aliens. At some point I'll have to describe their life cycle.
Tell me if there's anything that wouldn't work here.
Background Info:
- Alien homeworld has 3x Earth gravity and 5x Earth atmospheric density/pressure.
- Rotation is 36 hours, Orbit is 551 days.
- The aliens are cyclical hermaphrodites, so I only use words like male and female for convenience.
1) First Birth
- Female goes into body of water like a river or a lake and builds a wall out of mud, stone, clay, sticks, whatever, to create a section of still water
- This section of still water is called a Natal Pool
- Gives birth to gelatinous sac filled with 100 unfertilized eggs
- She, and other females of the community excrete nutrients and genetic material into the Natal Pool to provide an ample supply of energy and proteins for DNA reproduction
- gel sac, or womb sac, absorbs the nutrients and proteins so the eggs can start developing
2) Second Birth
- After 6 months, hatchlings break through womb sac and begin feeding on tiny water plants and decaying meat from fish and other small prey the mother brings to the Natal Pool
- Resemble shrimp or krill at this stage
- Will grow up to the size of an average dog
- Mother will continue expanding the size of the Natal Pool as the young grow larger
3) Metamorphosis
- Young are still fully aquatic.
- Form cocoons in the shallow water near the river bank or sea shore
- Cocoons have small perforations to absorb and release hormones/pheromones. After they hatch from the cocoons, these chemicals will form the basis of a weak hivemind that is shared among all 100 offspring of that particular brood.
4) Adulthood
- After one year the adult aliens emerge from the cocoons. They now resemble upright yet slightly hunched over crabs, and can grow to a height of 7 feet.
5) Sexchange
- After 30 years adults become reproductively capable
- Connection to brood hivemind is dissolved in this process
- Can reproduce 4 more times before death.
Tell me if there's anything that wouldn't work here.
