Scientists from Oxford University have witnessed 2 mitochondrial gene mutations in 50 years in a pedigree line of chickens. This suggests a mutation rate in the mitochondrial genome of 30%/1,000,000 years, whilst it was previously believed to be 2%/1,000,000 years, maximum.
The scientists also witnessed mtDNA passed down from father in that time span, showing that paternal leakage is not as rare as believed.
