Hello /sci/

In the event of a apocolyptic disaster that cripples modern society, what STEM degrees would be the most useful to your survival and the rebuilding of your community? Not mad max tier post apoc, but something along the lines of The Last of Us.

Science ones.

Having a grasp of physics would eventually allow you to come up with real life applications (traps, clocks, weapons, circuits, ovens, etc).

Biology would help you to have a small grasp of what actions to avoid (predators' behavior) while protecting you from lotsa shit (Which plants not to eat, nutrition values from different foods) plus, you could kind of improve your chances of domesticating some animals and/or making farms.

Chemistry would help both physics and biology.

Math is needed in all of the above.

"Eventually" is really far-fetched. Actual engineering knowledge of building these things is much, much more useful for this scenario.

Probably an EE OR a ME guy + a Civil guy would be the most essential "engineering combination", but I still think the scientific knowledge would be more fundamental, and this is coming from an EE student.

Having to go through all the scientific discoveries all over again would be quite a tragedy for the human race

any combo of EE/ME/CE duo would be able to pull off a lot of stuff by themselves.

any group of different science and engineer guys would be pretty damn tight, really. you'd fuck up any group comprised of mostly liberal arts/business people.

shit, get some nuke engineers and you'd have a small nuclear reactor designed and therefore easy energy. get some chemists and electrical engineers together and you'd be able to make some legitimately good batteries to store energy reliably.

civil/industrial would be useful for any sort of real infrastructure, as shit-tier as everyone says they are.

Advanced degrees all really depend on advanced civilization being in place in order to be useful. I mean, an EE would be useful, but probably not as useful as a skilled electrician. (And I say this as someone with a master's degree in EE.) And people saying physics and stuff are even more off the mark. What you would actually want is a bunch of master tradesman. And if you have room in your colony, then add some engys to get things interesting once the basics are set up.
