There are two HSV strains to be worried about
>HSV1>HSV2Many many people have HSV1 in their mouths. When you have an oral HSV1 outbreak, it will be a "cold sore" on the lip area. You can also get HSV1 on your genitals. Having oral HSV1 already in one location will protect you from catching it in the other location. Lifetime prevalence of oral HSV1 is very high, perhaps 90%. Any human that has ever had a "cold sore" has oral HSV.
HSV2 is a more aggressive virus. It generally is seen on the genitals. However, it can be caught in the mouth. Having HSV2 in one location will protect you from catching HSV2 in the other location.
Even though they have similar names, HSV1 and HSV2 are different. Having one will NOT protect you from catching the other.
