It's a slippery slope. You start off saying it's impossible and before long you're soaking diapers like shirts at wet t shirt contest.
I love wetting them as much as they'll hold. I'm not too squeamish to mess, but it's a hassle so I don't really do it often. You get over the smell surprisingly fast, and most of the people I've talked to agree with me that the only real deterrence is the lengthy cleanup.
As for hygiene, wetting is pretty harmless, but messing can easily give you a rash. I prefer to clean up as soon as I can. You can help keep your skin rash free AND complete the experience by using baby lotion and powder during a change.

You can try, but cloth really isn't as absorbant, and nothing beats the feel of that first genuine diaper. Store brands aren't usually as good, but they're still much better than DIY alternatives, and are usually pretty cheap.

underwear is a good enough emulation for poop, pee is really hard to match. you can wrap a towel up in a trash bag but it's not the same as the way a disposable swells up and gets soft and wonderful when you wet it...

the peeing felt good, so i tried to poop but noticed the garbage bag leaking and panicked. i tried to rush to the bathroom, but in the process of standing up i 'messed' and the sponge bits began falling out as i rushed down the hallway. i'm cleaning up in the tub now and it's fucking gross.

As a teen I experimented with underwear/plastic bags/towels but none of it can compare to the feeling of a diaper. Even cheap store brands do a better job than anything you could make at home (feeling-wise, not capacity-wise).

All Molicares I've seen have double tapes. I think I wear the Super Plus (is that the thick purple one?) and the regular Super (so many damn adjectives) on a regular basis and they both have adjustable tapes.

Well they're pretty thick and everything, so don't know if I'd recommend wearing them under clothes! But aside from that I find them super comfy compared to some other brands I've tried and they hold quite a bit so long as you make sure you put them on right.

I've been using Always Discreet, which is a misnomer, because they are not particularly discreet. But they are reinforced at the leg, so I have yet to have a leak in one. So that's nice.

Going with store brands is difficult. Diapers with the tapes usually perform better than pullup-style ones. The super-ABDL-styled diapers usually cost a lot more than the standard diapers online, so brands like Molicare and Abena (especially the middle-tier line, like Molicare Super and Abena 3) could be an option if all you've looked at the prices of are the fancy ABDL-themed ones. Still, diapers aren't cheap.

Well, that's another matter altogether. Cloth diapers are expensive up-front, but over time they become cheaper. At least that's the common wisdom. When you average in the water and electricity cost of having to wash them every use... I haven't run the numbers, but they're probably still cheaper over time.
Much thicker though! Which is a good AND bad thing. Definitely not a good thing while around others though.
