I never tried tinder so I can't talk about it, but yesterday I made a fake profile on a website to collect data and got 100 replies in 30mins. At about 5hours in I had 220+ messages.

Got all kinds of messages. Short, to the point and sexual, long and casual, couple of dickpics right off the bat, married guys, single guys, ages spanning from 20 to 44.
The guys that sent pictures weren't ugly at all, average 6 or 7/10 at the very least, definitely far from the basement dwelling stereotype.
If you are competing just against locals it might be worth it, if you just give out a contact and expect sexting, the chances of that happening are extremely slim regardless of how intelligent or attractive you are.
