For an extra-close shave, go over with the razor twice: once with the grain, once against the grain.
Conditioner works better than any shaving gel I've used.
Take it slow to avoid clogging the drain.
Scrub the area with a washcloth or loofah before and after. It exfoliates dead skin, which reduces the chance of ingrown hairs and itching.
After shaving (and exfoliating), run cool water over the area to reduce irritation. Then rub the area down with lotion.
