Is 26 year old gum safe to eat?

So there's a bit of time before the WS starts. Both teams have a championship title drought going back to the mid-80s, which is why I'm bringing /sp/ a little something from when those victories were fresh in our minds.

My local grocery store has a vending machine that they never restock, and which nobody buys things from. As a result, it is, and has been ever since it was installed a few years ago, filled with old trading card packs, which I assume the store acquired when they were new.
These were by far the oldest of the packs that had dates on them. They cost 75 cents each, but I only paid $1.25 because there was a quarter in the coin return.
