I was watching the Rugby world cup last weekend (first time since the last Rugby World Cup, haha). Anyway, New Zealand did the "Haka".

The other team just sort of stood there. Why don't they just ignore it and stretch and what not?

I find the whole haka thing really stupid actually. It might actually be the most retarded ritual in all of sports.

You get fined if you move too close to the haka which is the most bullshit.

A lot of teams have had different approaches to the haka - Ireland once moved up on it and then got absolutely pummelled. France moved up on it, ate a fine and then played a great game and almost beat them. Wales once stood there and wouldn't move, so the ABs wouldn't move either, so the refs had to come in and tell everyone to take their places. Wales also once wanted to sing their anthem after the haka so the ABs said fuck it and did it in the changerooms before they came out instead.

Australia once countered it by standing and watching it, then running 2 minutes of tackling drills while NZ was waiting for the kick off, and ended up winning that game.

Greetings /rug/. Not sure if I'm in the right place or not, but I watched the world cup game this weekend and I have a few questions. Rugby is hardly on television in the United States so we don't get a chance to watch it that much (although it seems most Universities here have a Rugby team). But first, an observation:

This sport is fucking insane.

It reminds me of a childhood game we play on the playground in America called "smear the queer". Yeah, not a real politically correct name, but neither are 12 year olds. The whole point of the game is to tackle the guy with the ball. There's no points or rules or any shit like that, you just attempt to tackle the guy with the ball and if you have the ball you run like hell.

I've spent a decent portion of my life watching American football (NFL) and playing contact sports so I'm familiar with the physicality of it all, but the amount of time that players spend "in the trenches" in Rubgy seems a lot higher.

I have a few quick questions that I hope don't sound too ridiculous:

Maybe I missed something, but when on offense and each player is pitching the ball backwards to their teammates, they never seem to switch direction and pitch the ball the other way. Can you only keep running towards one side of the field?

Why aren't more ball-handlers evading tackles? I noticed that many times it would be 1-on-1 and the ball carrier would just run right into the defender. Why not put a few jukes on the defender?

Can you just kick the ball downfield any time you like? It seems so.

Are there any "plays" that are designed or is it more free-flowing like soccer?

True, but I think you know really that the fine is in place because you lot would complain if a rugby team were to disrupt it. I'm all for sportsmanship so I'd gladly let them do the haka but you'd all be crying like a bunch of fucking girls if it was disrupted.

They do it after both countries' national anthems, directly before the game.

The issue is that part of the theater of going to an international rugby game that NZ is playing in is seeing the haka. The haka is worth too much for NZ, World Rugby and the game in general, so they don't want anyone fucking with it - which I think is a bit dumb because a haka is a haka - the ones you remember are the ones where people get up in each other's grills, but they're worried that a stoush will break out if they allow that.

But usually that just pisses off the All Blacks and has them come out firing so it's not a great idea.

You can do anything you want in response to it. The only caveat is you cannot advance past the 10m line (neither can the ABs) or you will be fined.
Worth noting that it is the IRB/World Rugby who do the fine, not NZ. They do it so it doesn't interrupt the broadcasting ($$$)
