College football, NBA, and MLB are subsidized heavily by the 2/3rds of cable subscribers who don't watch sports but have to pay for the channels as part of a bundle. Those cable subscribers are fleeing due to high prices, and they can't keep the revenue steady from their shrinking base of customers without gouging the price even higher and making the problem worse, so they're forced to cut costs anywhere they can by firing their on-air talent.
There's going to come a day very soon when SportsCenter will be airing 24/7 when there aren't sports on and it won't even have a studio or a host, it'll just be played in an order with a voiceover placed over them. That's how desperate they are to save money.
