She certainly claimed to be and was pretty agile with it, but I guess she wasn't really on par with a trained fighter, even ones that WEREN'T as physically strong as Gourry's "so strong I don't need actual muscles" type of strength.

The one time she beats a guy with her sword she does it to another wizard, who naturally wasn't a fencer himself and so wasn't particularly good at fighting or dodging that sort of thing but WAS good at countering her spells, hence her switching to swordplay.

I guess you could say she has high Dex and proficiency in rapiers, but she sure as hell wasn't a fighter doing the same thing.

Back when I first caught Record of Lodoss war OVA those that turned me onto it reinforced a contempt for the TV series version of it. I'll admit I haven't seen it in full, just read and learned about it, but what I heard reinforced what >>43360745 said. Long and short is the OVA is a classic, simple but straightforward and charmingly stereotypical fantasy adventure. There's no usual anime tropes and features and outside of the art style you'd have no idea it was an anime (Hell the intro's lyrics are in Italian). The TV Series gives you a shitty male lead, a more forgettable central party instead of the original one, anime-y tweaks to the story.

I think Lodoss War's strength was that it never made fun of itself and despite the cliches in the story it never took itself anything other then 100% seriously.
It completely embraces the genre it's in and thus portrays the cliches with serious and genuine drama that actually enhances the whole experience.

Ashram is a good example of the type of villain that grows in power with the characters rather then starts automatically better.

I feel the west has fallen behind on three points.

The first one is we never broke free of our Victorian puritan era, or as you say, the SJW boogieman has scared people from soccer-moms and tumblrinas into doing anything interesting.

The second point is that the west is shit at scenario design. The west's best trait is their ability to create interesting characters because western culture doesn't fall into the character archetypes that eastern character design does, but then they make the mistake of assuming that the unique characters will make it more interesting than the overall scenario when in reality that's just not true for most people. The most interesting Western show I've recently seen is iZombie of all things, about a medical student who gets bit by a zombie, and eating more brains gives her temporary psychic connection to that person which she uses to solve crimes. But after that, there's a huge pile of nothing that isn't really attention getting.

Meanwhile, in terms of Japanese shows, even though I'm picking out the "tsundere" and "reliable hero" archetypes out left and right, I'm hoping from show to show to show because each situation is completely different in how it's handled which makes it more interesting to me. I'm being exposed to the same characters in many varied reactions to situations as opposed to being exposed to unique characters in the same situations over and over.

The third thing I believe the west is weak at, and this is more about games than it is other media, is their insistence and hang up on explaining EVERYTHING. I mean, there's a few things that bug me, like people who still fall for that "We only use 10% of our brain" myth, but I've seen way too many times where a game has been made worse because the designers didn't want/care to explain it's function in the world and left it out. "The character isn't holding any paper, so there's no reason for them to have a map", and bam. I'm lost.

I saw a news report on the web about Serbia about five years back. Was on some international news site; don't remember which one.

Some guy went postal and shot a bunch of people, presumably in Belgrade. Really depressing stuff; there was some video of the guy sitting on a tree-stump or something, handcuffed, covered in blood.

The report cut to Serbia's Minister of the Interior/the equivalent, who was telling a reporter that it was a shock and a tragedy. The usual trite responses politicians are trained to give. Then the camera zoomed out.

THE FUCKING KILLER WAS SITTING ABOUT FIVE FEET FROM THE MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR OF THE WHOLE COUNTRY. Not a bodyguard in sight.

If the Balkans are pretty much Europe's Wild West, Serbia's Deadwood.

The core of the problem is that the social democratic party's basic function is to represent the working class of Sweden and evolve according to what the people want. This was a lot easier back in the day when the media was limited and people themselves put a lot more effort into conforming to society.

Today everyone in Sweden is not on the same page, they all have their own idea of what they want and as a result the social democratic party struggles with having an identity.

So the social democratic party leaders will as a result end up pissing people off no matter what opinion they have. So they try to inspire by being progressive. Sahlin was simply awful at it and tried to hard.

Sahlin is thankfully no longer part of the social democratic party and no one there seems to miss her.
