think how awesome it would be, a party all with ambuscade and the alert feat.

it would push DMs to put a bit of thought in the combat encounters, with waves of combatants, or triggers, and traps.

it's a mechanic that works best with dynamic combats, and those are fun!

Most people in game never level up, a commoner will have those base stats til the day they die. The veteran fighter in the MM is a fifth level fighter IIRC, and thats what you seem to be describing, so its probably the right powerlevel. Furthermore if he was an old member of the kings guard or whatever, his encounters would have been largely reactionary. Fend off assassins for 60 years? That can't really be more than a few dozen encounters, how many times a year is this king being assassinated? Meanwhile adventurers actively do shit like seek out assassins, powerful wizards and dragons. Makes sense that he would fight more as an adventurer than he did as a kings guardsmen.

You can only draw a weapon once per turn though, so even with that you can't make more than one attack per turn with handcrossbows.

There's one ridiculously small benefit for four levels, then something that might benefit the party but is individual to the PDK, then some other features that I can't quite fathom because I've never played past level 10.

Compare that to most archetypes where you can feel the change at 3rd level. Two players can play the same class, choose different archetypes, and be very different (especially in combat).

The PDK gets next to nothing.

Just use one hand crossbow and an empty hand? If you have Extra Attack, you can shoot twice and be reloading it with your free hand if you have Crossbow Expertise. Then, since you attacked with a 1h weapon, you use a bonus action and shoot with the same hand crossbow.

I'm playing a sword and board paladin right now and I want to do something with my bonus action. All the spells that use it are concentration and right now I am the parties blesser, so I cant really use that. We also have a wolf barbarian so there isn't any point in grabbing shield master to knock people down for advantage. Any good use of bonus action while staying S&B?

Wolf barbarian gives you advantage, sure, but knocking people gives them disadvantage. Shield Master is a good feat

Also +2 to Dex saves and Evasion.

Then why make them have to be Rangers in the first place? If you don't want to play normal DnD then just modify the rules and give them all Abuscade by default. It's not like everyone is going to pick the UA Ranger anyway so that way you secure everyone having it.

My players just had our session last night with POTA and this is what happened:

They approached Lance Rock and triggered every trap, having rocks fall on them and almost dying, they approached the final room with the 4 Skeletons, 5 Crawling Claws and 1 zombie Plus Oreoith the Necromancer who the players lovingly called "Oreo The Cookiemancer." He called out to them, about ready to cast his level 3 magic missle to kill the party (much to the expectation of /tg/ in telling me that "Lance Rock WILL kill them," and the players played it completely different. They called out to the necromancer and offered a truce. They decided to fall back though after one of the players intimidated him (natural 20) and he fled back to the final room. So after a long drawn out fight, the players were a bit wounded and came as peacefully to Oreoith's room as they could, and another player indimidated him into submission with a 19 roll. After tying him up and progressing slowly towards the Tomb of Moving Stones, Oreoith has rubbed off on them and they are excited because they (as they believe) have found a very powerful NPC ally.

So I am re-reading the entry for Oreoith as we speak and constructing his character sheet. I know he's Chaotic Evil, but I am not playing him like a suicidal idiot. He will "accidentally" kill the minor NPC Acolyte during the coming battle. The Acolyte is a kind of pet npc for the wizard, so this act from Oreo would be seen as very vile, and any chance to escape or kill a player character with his level 3 magic missile is totally going to be totally viable for him. He still wants to be a great necromancer. Any other ideas are welcome though.

Yes, but you also could grapple them, so they can't get up.
Knocking them prone also helps in case of AoO.
You could also shove someone out of a cliff with that action too.

I can't grapple them because I don't have a free hand and my character is mounted, so I never really incur AoO. Cliff thing would be valid if we had dangerous terrain more often though.

I'm the same as you, but I took Shield Master at level 1 as a Variant Human. My group uses flanking and back attack rules, so I've actually not gotten much use out of it. Still, it's funny as Hell to knock some poor schmuck on his ass every round.

How does Minor Image & creating cover work?

Does the PC have advantage on attack rolls, since he's hidden when he makes the attack roll from imaginary cover?
What happens when an enemy fires back? Surely the AC bonus from cover doesn't really exist, because if an attack misses by 2 for example, that means it hit cover and therefore passed through the illusion and hit the player anyway, right?
Even more, if the attack misses by the cover AC amount, the illusion is surely dispelled since the attacker has physical interaction with it and sees the arrow passing through, right?

This is a 200ish-page book, anon, and 5eg is not known for its graciousness when presented with a pirated sourcebook unless it is perfectly aligned, indexed, tagged, and searchable. As a result, the buyers who've previously posted scans have decided it's more worth third while to not bother.

Well your character might not always be mounted - say in a cave, castle, dungeon, or other cramped spaces where it would be impossible to bring a mount in.

as >>43376185 said, being able to shove your enemies is a nice thing to have, even if somebody else can already do it. Also the wolf barbarian isn't getting that advantage, only his allies are, so he might appreciate getting the advantage from your said shoves. And even with the number of rages, he still might run out of them before your party gets a chance for a long rest, Shield Master remains regardless.

The wolf barbarian gets advantage because of reckless attack, and even if I wasn't mounted I would want to:
1. Move away from the guy that I just knocked on his ass.

2. Still provoke an AoO, albeit with disadvantage.

3. I would have to attack that turn, so even on the off chance that I would want to retreat, I would want to cast healing spells on me or my buddies, and that would occupy my action.

Probably just gonna have to multiclass to sorc for quickened spells or something, it just feels like half my turn is wasted if i don't have a bonus action.

Goblins tend to get bullied into working for stronger races. Hobgoblins and orcs are usually near the top of the chain in those situations because they're stronger than the little guys and smarter than the big ones.

Goblinoids include goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears. And weird extra shit from other editions that may never show up in 5e. They're all generally mean spirited assholes that survive by stealing/banditry, hobgoblins being outliers in that they are more organized and militant. In myth goblin was an umbrella term for all kinds of weird, supernatural, often mischievous creatures. There was a lot of overlap with trolls/boggarts/whatever else.

Orcs are something separate. In Forgotten Realms they came out of portals. They run around raiding and pillaging cause their god tells them to. Any similarities to goblins are coincidental. In fantasy fiction they come from Tolkien, who more or less used orc as another word for his goblins, which is likely the source of much confusion in fantasy fiction at large.

Ogres are related to giants. they are big, dumb and eat people sometimes before/after robbing them. They too are only coincidentally similar to orcs ad goblins. In myth ogres were cannibals, sometimes also giants. Though they were often intelligent and malevolently cunning, in contrast to how fantasy fiction has typcast them
